A Carbink races into Verdanturf Town from the rolling hills to its east. It emits twinkling, alien sounds in a panic as it searches for any human willing to listen. Most of the townsfolk seem to ignore it, however, as they go about their day shopping at the outdoor grocer or occupying the benches throughout.

For the first time in a very long time— or, at least, for as long as it can remember— Gelebor the Carbink begins to feel angry. With its trainer's life on the line, which loyal Pokémon wouldn't, after all? This anger builds up until, eventually, the floating mineral points its trembling body towards a young woman it sees strolling nearby ( ).

But, rather than tackle her, the Carbink instead summons a small stone from the ground nearby before casting it at the back of her thigh in a huff (ROCK THROW).

Maybe a human would listen to it now!

Well, Violet was many things. That was something she often prided herself in. But, even though she liked to act like she had hardened in recent times – especially after a certain someone had so brutally rebuked her – she still was not exactly a warrior. Or too attentive of her surroundings. When a rock was suddenly sniped at her thigh, she immediately lost her balance from the sudden, unexpected pain, yelping and falling to the side, hand scraping over the rough ground as she tries to catch herself.

The sudden attack had gotten her off-guard, naturally, but at the very least she had cultured one response. Even before trying to get up again, the young woman immediately reaches for a Pokeball and releases her go-to response to dangerous situations.

Meaning that the Carbink would suddenly be facing a very angry looking Rhyperior looming down on it.

Gelebor certainly hadn't anticipated a scary face-off with Rhyperior, of course. And, for a moment, he was frozen in place with shock, the tiny crystals at his base twinkling with a pitiful sound. But then he remembers his plight. His master!

Shards of rock suddenly bounce off him as he sharpens (SHARPEN) with determination and a steely glare. It verbally attempts to communicate to the Rhyperior, expressing urgency after the well-being of his master. Then, drifting away towards the eastern exit of Verdanturf, it stops and turns around to see whether the trainer and her pokémon will follow.

Rhyperior was good for farming, but she was not the sharpest tool in the shed. Probably came with the territory of only being brought out when her boss was in danger. But she saw an enemy Pokemon, one that even sharpened itself. Yes, it might pretend to try and communicate now, but that was only because it was no longer facing a hapless little girl, but a powerful, grand Rhyperior instead!

So, she roared – and started to trample after the fleeing Carbink, her master in tow. Neither were particularly willing in that moment to just let someone randomly assailing her go, so the cojoined chase continued vehemently, even if that meant leaving the city premises!

A chase!

This wasn't exactly the type of attention that Gelebor had hoped to sustain, but it worked for now! With sunlight constantly gleaming off the Carbink's crystals at differing angles, it glided across the grassy open field beyond Verdanturf Town's eastern gate with the two in tow. If it caught them slowing down or considering to turn back, it even stopped to chuck another harmless rock at the Rhyperior (ROCK THROW).

Mischievous when need be, and banking on the stone golem's difficult temper, the Carbink eventually reaches an old barbed wire fence separating Route 117 from a large swathe of untamed land. The floating mineral squeezes between this barbed wire without a care, snapping one of those chords free before it proceeds into the wooded area beyond.

Distant, the sound of... bubbles?

Okay, that was far enough. While she had enough stamina to go on – really a natural result of her upbringing in a ranger family – that did not mean she wanted to run some kind of marathon at random just because a dumb Pokemon felt like running away from her like this. Nah, she was not exactly being paid enough for this. And she was not being paid anything here to begin with.

Hence, she simply stopped. “Leave it be, Rhyperior,” she instructed, and a grumbling Rock of a Pokemon acquiesced. It wanted to pursue, certainly. But at the end of the day, a trainer’s order was more important. Plus, it didn’t want to go through some random fence, either. Neither of them had a good reason to pursue, to they simply stopped and headed back towards the town, ready to turn and throw rocks of their own at the Carbink if it came back. That was the smart thing to do, right?

Just past the fence it had squeezed past, Gelebor turned to see the pair come to a slow stop, before turning back around altogether. This frustrates the gem, especially with time running so thin, so it charges back.

With a burst of POWER GEM like a shotgun blast, the fence breaks apart entirely before it summons a small gathering of rocks around it (ANCIENT POWER) and casts it towards the Rhyperior's back. Its hasty, twinkling chorus of noise picks up again after the tumultuous sound of rock subsides. It will make them understand! There was no time for this!

Using its mineral-based ears, the Carbink points in the direction of the woods.

That weird…thing really did not know what was good for it, now did it? Violet whippe around shortly after Rhyperior did. First, that weird Pokemon attacked her out of the blue. Now it took another potshot at her from behind that fence. Well, through that fence. But that really didn’t make a lot of difference now, did it? It was gone.

And so, really, was her patience. Vio was done playing with this thing. And she was also done playing fair here. Rhyperior did not really know any attacks to fight from afar and it was clearly slower than the other. Hence, she called for her Delphox, which would then throw Mystical Fire at the dumb stone Pokemon while Rhyperior lumbered towards it, once again uncaring if it set anything around them on fire.

The appearance of a Delphox had certainly been unexpected. Gelebor's fight or flight instinct kicked in despite its rush of anger, and it opted for the latter as it saw the magician spin a concoction of MYSTICAL FIRE with her wand.

There was little cover and little it could do besides turn around and brace itself (SAFEGUARD), however. The fire struck the fence, and the trees behind the Carbink, in a fierce, roaring blaze. Though it had no feet to feel the rumble of the ground below, Gelebor could still hear the Rhyperior drawing ever closer with every passing second, too.

Sharpen, Safeguard, Power Gem, Rock Throw, Light Screen, Ancient Power... what else could it do to guide them towards the peril that had seized it master? If it had been a Dragapult, it could sweep them into a shadowy portal and spawn them there in an instant. If it had been a  Dracovish, it could force them there with a giant surf.

But no. It was useless. As it had always been. Unable to protect its master. Not good for anything. Just a pitiful, sorry coward who couldn't even convince a Rhyperior to follow.

Even after the fire subsided, the Carbink sat there, grounded and trembling. Its twinkling noises had adopted a different tone: sad, short squeaks that wavered in and out.

Hah! Now that worked. Granted, she had set half the area on fire….but this was self-defense! That thing was coming for her again. No judge would sentence her for something like this. They hadn’t for that secret base, either. Though Vio did recall Delphox swiftly. No one was watching right then, though the fire might make someone come over. In fact, she replaced it with Piplup instead, half-heartedly directing that one to bubble-gun the fence or something.

That was probably good enough. Hopefully. Still, the little one was down on the ground, and Rhyperior would put its foot on it as well, keeping it in state, defeated and downed. That was a pretty good situation and out of all but reflex, Vio threw a ball at it.
Only that wouldn’t work. Instead, the ball would just bounce off, back into her hand, ineffective. “Huh?” Having never tried this before, Violet was briefly confused, before she remembered an old lesson. “A trainer’s Pokemon?” She would look around and ask more loudly. “Okay, who is there? And what the flying frick is your issue?”

Gelebor whimpers as it feels the Rhyperior's flat foot set down upon it. The pressure is nothing to the little Carbink, of course. It was born under immense pressure, after all. Far more immense than this: the kind that formed diamonds that would last until the end of the time, if left unearthed and untouched.

The touch of a pokéball against its surface, on the other hand, does serve to unnerve the Carbink. Even when it proves ineffective, Gelebor desperately tries to shake free.

The woman calls out to its master, but only Gelebor knows his master can't exactly respond. So, after shaving a bit of itself off (SHARPEN), the Carbink finally manages to slip out from under the Rhyperior and rush back towards the other side of the fence, where it bounces for the continued attention of the two. Yes! Over here!

In the distance, a loud pop shakes the trees, followed by a strange chorus of chittering. There is trouble ahead, and wild Pokémon flee all around to escape it.

No answer. Figured. Why should it be easy, after all? She didn’t really get easy. At least as of late. Usually, annoying was what she got. Which was the case here, too. Either that guy didn’t answer because he didn’t want to, potentially laughing at her from the underbrush – or he couldn’t because he was in some kind of trouble that most likely, she was not going to be able to do much about. Either way, this had the potential of getting annoyed.

Then the forest exploded. Or, well, it at least sounded like that. It probably wasn’t related to the tiny rock-mon freeing itself, though at this point she was inclined to believe just about anything, really. Still, big boom, somewhere in the distance, trees shaking, birds fleeing. Yes, that was just about her luck.
And really, she should have done like those animals and just leave. Vio sighed. “This is stupid. Really, really, stupid. If this isn’t worth it somehow, I am going to take you and turn you into a….what did one turn a tiny rock like you into, anyway? I don’t even know.” Slightly resigning herself, Violet would start to follow this Pokemon towards whatever the heck this was about.

Gelebor casts the female an exhausted look, but is relieved to hear she will finally bother to see this through. Quickly leading the way past oak trees and brambles, the Carbink is clearly very anxious to have them move fast. A minute or so into the forest, the purpose for that becomes quite clear as they come upon a large hole in the earth.

Sizable enough to assume it had once been little more than a crater, this pit now had various cave entrances within it, and was criss-crossed with the husks of large dead trees and weeds. At its bottom, rainwater pooled at the ground at least twelve inches deep, with egg sacs floating at its surface. Like rats crawling across sewer pipes, an entire swarm of Araquanid and Dewpider used the network of trees as a means to navigate this massive den.

Perhaps most shocking of all, however, were the captured prey floating above this death trap and hatchery in large, mostly stationery, bubbles. A Fennekin, dead and drowned, floated limp in one of these bubbles. An oblivious Magikarp in another. And, in the largest, a black-haired royal who was struggling intensely to hold his breath for much longer.

The Carbink gave a desperate whine.

Uhh…..that really wasn’t her kind of thing. Like, at all. Defending herself was something she could do, sure. She could even help others with what they were doing, if she saw what needed to be done. But this? This was an army of wild Pokemon, lots of death, and some dude in mortal peril. This was ranger stuff. It was precisely what she did not want to bother with.
Vio stepped from her perch on the ledge. She had briefly used it to survey the area, of course. But now, she didn’t want to be out in the open for any longer than necessary. This was suddenly dangerous, for more than just her butt. She sighed, turned, then stopped. The last time she’d tried to help someone for any reason, it had ended up with her more hurt than ever, for no gain at all.

She took a step away, then stopped again. Ugh. She wasn’t exactly a model citizen or anything. And if she heard that a neighbouring town was experiencing a dangerous flood, she’d quickly decide to not go anywhere near it. But….it kind of was different if someone was dying right in front of you, wasn’t it?
Another sigh, this one deeper. Violet reached for one of her Pokeballs. At least she still remembered some of it all. “Okay. Whatever. You there!” She pointed at the Carbink. “You clearly escaped them before, so you will do so again. Go down, make a ruckus. I am not putting my Togekiss into any more danger than need be.”

Violet called for the white flier. It was fast and versatile enough to navigate that place, probably. Her plan was simple enough – instead of actually trying to fight all of that, she’d just have Togekiss swoop in, destroy the bubble, pick the guy up and carry him up. Simple, but seemed rather effect in her head. Hence, she settled for that. The little one would have to fight for its trainer though. She wasn’t going to throw any more of her own Pokemon down there than necessary.

The Carbink certainly wasn't a coward. But it seemed to have developed a severe case of arachnophobia since seeing its master overwhelmed by the swarm below. As such, the woman's command was a fairly tall order for the magical little creature to fulfill. It knew, however, the importance of fulfilling it.

Pacing back and forth, Gelebor eventually mustered enough courage to take a literal leap of faith into the pit. The crabby female refused to budge otherwise, after all, and he reasoned nothing had ever before pierced his core... so what could a swarm of Araquanid really do, right? His body trembled. He gave a little whine.

Before he could give himself the few seconds it took to give in to the fear, the Carbink floated backwards before charging ahead with a raucous clamor of tinkling noise.

All the spiders dwelling in the pit below scrambled to set their eyes upon the falling rock as it screamed, hitting a few fallen trunks before splashing into the water below. was given her window as the spiders swiftly crawled or rappelled themselves down with web. Gelebor tried desperately to roll himself upright again.
